At BayNel, we believe ESG & sustainability strategies start with great insight.

Our Materiality & Insights service helps you understand what really matters, to your business, your stakeholders and your sector. By uncovering the key Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues shaping your future, we turn complexity into clarity and give you the confidence to act.

We help businesses stay ahead in an increasingly sustainability-focused world, identifying the most relevant risks and opportunities so you can make informed, strategic decisions that build long-term resilience and impact.

Why insights matter

In a fast-moving market, the right insights empower your business to:

  • Identify and manage sustainability-related risks and opportunities
  • Prioritise your efforts where they’ll make the biggest difference
  • Strengthen compliance and transparency in line with evolving regulation
  • Build trust and credibility with customers, employees and investors
  • Create a clear, evidence-based foundation for your ESG strategy

When you know what’s material, you can focus on what counts, and build a sustainability strategy that’s meaningful, measurable and achievable.

Our approach

Every organisation is different, so we tailor our process to your business context, growth stage and level of ambition. Our work brings together stakeholder insights, peer benchmarking and regulatory intelligence to give you a 360-degree view of your sustainability landscape.

Here’s how we do it:

  1. Sustainability Insights
We start by uncovering what really matters, to your business, your industry and your stakeholders. Through targeted research and analysis, we identify the ESG themes and issues driving change and opportunity in your sector.
  2. Stakeholder Engagement
Your people and stakeholders know your business best. We run surveys, interviews and focus groups to capture their views, from employees and customers to investors and community voices. This helps ensure your sustainability priorities reflect real-world expectations.
  3. Sector Analysis & Peer Review
We benchmark your performance using our bespoke scoring system, identifying where you lead and where there’s room to grow. You’ll see how your peers are performing, along with leadership opportunities unique to your business.
  4. Regulatory & Non-Regulatory Review
We help you stay ahead of changing ESG regulations and disclosure frameworks, ensuring your approach meets compliance requirements and aligns with best practice standards.
  5. Materiality Assessment
This is where everything comes together. We evaluate which ESG issues are most material to your business, and why, helping you focus on what truly drives value and impact.

Single and Double Materiality

Different organisations need different levels of depth.

Single materiality focuses on what’s most important to your business and stakeholders, assessing issues through two lenses:

  • Impact on your organisation: how ESG issues affect business performance and operations
  • Importance to your stakeholders: how much these issues matter to employees, customers and investors

Double materiality goes further. It evaluates not only how ESG factors affect your financial performance, but also how your business impacts the world around it, positively or negatively. This holistic approach is increasingly recognised in sustainability reporting and helps position your company as a responsible, forward-thinking leader.

Both approaches result in a clear materiality matrix, a visual summary that highlights where to focus your energy, investment and action.

The outcome

By investing in Materiality & Insights, you lay the foundation for a sustainability strategy that’s:

  • Targeted and effective – focused on the issues that matter most
  • Compliant and future-proof – ready for evolving ESG disclosure standards
  • Credible and transparent – demonstrating your commitment to responsible business
  • Practical and actionable – giving you a roadmap to deliver measurable impact

At BayNel, we help you turn insight into action, giving you the clarity and confidence to build a sustainability strategy that drives progress, purpose and performance.
