Case Study: Supporting organisations to better understand and reduce their Scope 3 emissions

Supporting organisations to better understand and reduce their Scope 3 emissions is a key part of our work at BayNel.

The challenge:

A mid-sized construction company wanted to better understand the emissions within their Scope 3 supply chain and establish a clear baseline to support future reduction targets. With limited visibility of emissions across procurement categories, they needed a robust methodology to analyse spend data, identify the biggest emission hotspots, and inform a more strategic procurement approach.

What we did:

  • Analysed procurement spend data to develop a Scope 3 Cat 1 purchased goods and services (PGS) emissions baseline
  • Worked closely with key internal stakeholders to validate assumptions and ensure the analysis reflected procurement realities.
  • Identified key emissions hotspots across sectors, suppliers, materials and overhead spend.
  • Developed practical recommendations to improve data quality, strengthen supply chain engagement and encourage innovation.
  • Proposed a 3-year roadmap that could support improve data quality and emission reductions across the supply chain.
  • Set improvement targets to help guide future procurement and decarbonisation efforts.

The outcome

✔ A clear Scope 3 PGS emissions baseline to inform future reporting and reduction planning

✔ Improved understanding of emissions hotspots across suppliers, sectors, materials and overhead spend

✔ Actionable recommendations to strengthen procurement practices and supply chain engagement

✔ Insight that is helping shape a more informed and strategic procurement approach

A really valuable piece of work unlocking practical insights for supply chain decarbonisation.

If Scope 3 is a focus area for your organisation, we’d be happy to share more about our approach.
